Sacred Heart Chapel, Lalur

A chapel at Lalur Centre dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built on ground that was once a clump of bamboo.

Photo to come

The Sacred Heart Chapel stands at Lalur Centre, the junction at the heart of Lalur. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Where the bamboo grew

The book notes that the site was once a fine clump of bamboo. That fits everything else it says about Lalur: until quite recently much of the land between Lalur’s main street, the kol (low-lying paddy wetland) fields and today’s John Mathai Centre was thick bamboo, with small streams and plenty of snakes.

Prayer here

A litany, a novena and an annual feast are held here, and the book says they are celebrated with great devotion.

The book does not say when the chapel was built. If you know its history, the date of the feast, or have old photographs of Lalur Centre, please share them with us.
