A small chapel in Aranattukara's western market, said to have been built by five men of the market who all shared the name Ouseph.
Photo to come
St. Joseph’s Chapel stands in Padinjare Angadi, the western market of Aranattukara. It is dedicated to St. Joseph.
Five men named Ouseph
The book has only a short note about it, but it is a lovely one. In the early days, it is said, the chapel was built by five men of the market who were all called Ouseph, the Malayalam form of Joseph. Building a chapel to the saint they were named after seems a natural thing for them to have done.
Padinjare Angadi was one of the trading streets that made Aranattukara busy in the days of the port. A small chapel here, where traders and passers-by could stop and pray, fits the pattern of kappelas (wayside chapels) found all over Kerala.

We do not yet know when the chapel was built, who the five Ousephs were, or how the chapel is kept today. If your family remembers, or you have an old photograph, we would love to hear from you.
