St. Sebastian's Chapel, Thekkekkara

A chapel at Thekkekkara (Vadookkara) that belonged to the West Church in the years of the divided parish, once reached by boat.

Photo to come

St. Sebastian’s Chapel stands at Thekkekkara, also known as Vadookkara, across the water from old Aranattukara.

A West Church chapel

When the parish was split between the East Church and the West Church, this kurishupalli (chapel of the cross) belonged to the West Church. The book recalls that there was Mass here every Sunday at six in the morning in those days.

Getting there was part of the story. Before the bridge over the boat canal, people had to cross by boat, and even after stepping off they still had a short walk to the chapel. It is a reminder of how much daily life in Aranattukara once depended on the water.

Today a road links Aranattukara and Vadookkara, and the boat journey is a memory.

What we still need

We have not given current Mass times, because the Sunday Mass described in the book belongs to the past. If you know how the chapel is used today, its feast day, or have memories of the boat trip to Sunday Mass, please share them with us.
