Infant Jesus Convent, Aranattukara

The Holy Family sisters' convent, begun in 1947 in a rented house at Padinjare Angadi so that the girls of Aranattukara could go to high school.

The Infant Jesus Convent belongs to the Congregation of the Holy Family. It was set up with one clear purpose: to give the girls of Aranattukara a high school of their own.

A rented house at Padinjare Angadi

When Tharakan’s School was raised to a high school in 1947–48, its girl pupils were handed over to the Holy Family sisters. The convent began on 26 May 1947 in a rented house belonging to Chiriyankandath Antony Michael at Padinjare Angadi, and a sister arrived to teach the girls’ eighth class.

A home of its own

The sisters later bought a coconut grove on the western side of Padinjare Angadi from Kuruthukulangara Koola Mathew, father of the well-known Varu Master. The book records that a parishioner, Chungath Rappai Joseph, gave generous help both with buying the land and with building a chapel for the convent.

In 1950 the classes became a separate school, the Infant Jesus Girls’ High School, which still stands beside the convent. In 1983 the same congregation opened a second house nearby, Pavanatma Convent.
