Aranattukara is a neighbourhood in the west of Thrissur city, about 2.5 km south-west of the Swaraj Round, where the town meets the kol wetlands. It was once a village and a river port of its own; today it is part of the Thrissur Corporation.

Boundaries

There is no single official boundary for “Aranattukara”. The name covers a neighbourhood that today falls in two Corporation wards. The Aranattukara ward takes in the northern part, with the schools and convents. The old heart of the place, the market streets around St. Thomas Church and Tharakan’s school, is in the Laloor ward.

Ward boundaries: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), from the 2015 ward division. Wards were redrawn in 2025; the map will be updated when the new boundaries are available.

Measured on the map, the Aranattukara ward covers about 1.9 km² and the Laloor ward about 1.2 km². The old revenue village was larger: the book says it took in the desams (localities) of Aranattukara, Lalur, Karyattukara and Olari.

Surrounding areas

Going round the two wards, starting in the north:

Laloor itself — the Lalur temple and the old trenching ground — lies within the Laloor ward, next door to Aranattukara’s market.

People

The census does not count Aranattukara on its own. It counts the whole Thrissur Corporation as one town, with 315,957 people in 2011.

The 2011 census also published figures for each Corporation ward, using the ward numbers of the time. The ward that appears to be Aranattukara (ward 50 in the 2005 numbering) had:

  Census 2011
People 5,230 (2,560 men, 2,670 women)
Households 1,179
Women per 1,000 men 1,043 (Kerala: 1,084)
Literacy 89.8%
Children under 7 417

These ward figures are still being checked: the census tables give ward numbers but not names, and the wards were redrawn in 2010. We will confirm them against the official District Census Handbook.
